Right Wy. The 'sticks' is any area outside a city, OristarA, probably because there are trees in the rural areas. The suburbs have many different slang names, all of them pejorative or demeaning, I hesitate to list them all here because usually you are concerned with proper usage but what the hey, a little slang can make for interesting prose.
the sticks.
the burbs
the boondocks.
the boonies.
Hooterville
Mayberry
outland
faroutland
Old McDonaldland (the farmer not the burger)
Hicksville (a real city on Long Island)
Sticksville
and
East Jesus.
That's enough there are many more, (many referring to cows and goats) Suffice to say that city dwellers look down their noses at country folk. And vice versa.
Peace
Joe
And don't forget "out in the tulies"! (Tulies are reeds that grow in swampy, unused ground.)
No ... Tule is a town in Greenland. You don't talk to enough WWII vets.
Ugh. . . my former Anti-Christ roommate was from Hicksville. . . thanks for drudging up the old memories. . .
Sorry, Joe, my WWII uncles served in the Pacific...
I think it's spelled Thule, pronounced Two=lee.
All I know is that the two most God-forsaken places on the earth were Thule and Shemya, Alaska.
Thanks for giving me the right end of the stick.
