New York Times asks 25 science questions.

The weekly New York Times section Science Times recently published their 25th anniversary issue. http://www.nytimes.com/indexes/2003/11/10/science/index.html

in it they asked 25 writers (not me Evil or Very Mad ) to answer 25 questions.

I think some of the questions are important. I've started links for those, but I wonder if any of the rest would interest anyone here for deeper discussion. Not that I can help in that regard besides linking the article to the question.

So the real question is

Should I start a thread to any of the following:

Will Humans ever visit Mars?
What is Gravity?
Will we ever find Atlantis?
What are our replaceable parts?
What should we eat?
When is the next ice age?
What came before the BIG Bang?
Could we live forever?
Are men necessary? Women?
What is the next plague?
Can robots become conscious?
Why do we sleep?
How smart are animals?
Could Science prove there is a God?
Is Evolution truly random?
How did Life begin?
Can drugs make us happy? Smart?
Should the Genome be improved?
How much nature is enough?
What's the hardest math problem?
Does the paranormal exist?

Answer below those questions you would like to discuss further. I will start a link for it or you can take it upon yourself to do so.

What's happening?

Will Humans ever visit Mars? Sure, as soon as we run out of oil here.
What is Gravity? The opposite of levity.
Will we ever find Atlantis? It's on Paradise Island, Bahamas...right across the harbor from Nassau.
What are our replaceable parts? Fat cells. Believe me, they replace themselves.
What should we eat? The question is, WHEN should we eat?
When is the next ice age? Right before we move further south.
What came before the BIG Bang? The Big "Uh Oh."
Could we live forever? Who says we don't?
Are men necessary? Women? Men, absolutely. Women...we could do with a few less.
What is the next plague? Designer food.
Can robots become conscious? Probably more so than some people I know.
Why do we sleep? Because sermons are boring.
How smart are animals? (See robot question above.)
Could Science prove there is a God? Sure. Proving there ISN'T would be much harder.
Is Evolution truly random? No, there's a pattern to it.
How did Life begin? I don't know. I wasn't there.
Can drugs make us happy? Smart? Happy, yes. Smart...um...uh....what was the question?
Should the Genome be improved? Yes, to eliminate pain and suffering when preventable.
How much nature is enough? Nature is nice until it starts interfering with my comfort.
What's the hardest math problem? Finding the calculator. Who took it THIS time?
Does the paranormal exist? Obviously so. George W. Bush is President of the United States.

Aren't they both funny? And I love that both of them had different funny answers to the same questions. It's like being in a writer's meeting at Saturday Night Live.

I think I will post some of the REAL questions as threads in the coming days, but first I have to make a lemon pie for Thanksgiving at my brother's....

Night

Re: New York Times asks 25 science questions.
Will Humans ever visit Mars?

Yes, and when they do, they will leave the place a mess.

What is Gravity?

Gravity is what keeps your beer in the bottle after you take the cap off.

Will we ever find Atlantis?

I didn't even know she was missing. (Oh, and that's "Alanis".)

What are our replaceable parts?

Pretty much anything that isn't as nice as the one(s) our neighbors were born with.

What should we eat?

The question is when.

When is the next ice age?

As soon as they offer Ray Romano enough money.

What came before the BIG Bang?

The big dinner and drinks.

Could we live forever?

You and I specifically? No, probably not.

Are men necessary? Women?

Men are necessary if you need stereo equipment connected up. Women are needed to praise them for the good job when they finish.

What is the next plague?

It will begin with a set of inane science questions.

Can robots become conscious?

Sure, but you have to knock them out first.

Why do we sleep?

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me it's the only time I can rest my brain from the work of keeping this planet spinning.

How smart are animals?

It varies, but in general most are smarter than Cher, but not as smart as Sonny (was).

Could Science prove there is a God?

Sure, but can they come up with His address?

Is Evolution truly random?

In your case, definitely.

How did Life begin?

Near as I can sort out, at some point in the distant past two inanimate objects f#cked and that got the whole thing going.

Can drugs make us happy? Smart?

Yes, either. Just not both at the same time.

Should the Genome be improved?

Not until they've perfected the garden gnome.

How much nature is enough?

You know, a few shrubs, a couple of nice ornamental trees, a well-maintained lawn...

What's the hardest math problem?

Knowing when to stop adding one to infinity.

Does the paranormal exist?

Yes, both of them.
