But what does that mean 'assign'? Surely we 'assign' meaning to everything in one sense, but that does not mean it does not have inherant meaning. If by history you mean the history of mankind, then sure, we 'assign' meaning, but surely saying the history of humanity is equivalant to saying our journey to fulfill our purpose. Our history reflects an ontological purpose.

Our history reflects a will to transcend the limitations of nature, so how can history have ontological meaning? You think that objective reality assigns value to our history? You can only believe that if you believe that reality is guided by a will or spirit, and I really don't even want to get started on that issue. We are the ones who give our lives meaning and purpose, and there is nothing wrong with that.

In fact, I prefer the subjective nature of purpose and value over a fatalistic purpose assigned by a spirit because that seems to negate free will. There is no inherent meaning or purpose to anything. I'm sorry to say this, but the universe doesn't care about you. Just because you believe that a blue sky is beautiful doesn't mean that such a belief is objectively true. Just because you believe that murder is wrong (as I do) doesn't mean that it is objectively true that murder is wrong. Assuming that there is inherent meaning or purpose to natural phenomenon is to assume that nature transcends itself or that someone transcends nature and has assigned meaning and purpose to nature. If that's what you believe then that's fine, but I don't care to argue about that right now.

A remarkable fact about history is that the agents of the past are never aware of the agents of the future, but the agents of the future are always aware of the agents of the past. This allows for a future inheritor of history to build upon the events of the agents of the past.
Agents? Define agents please, I'm not entirely sure we have the same understanding of the word and useage.

Ofcaus an intelligent person can predict the future, that's what they do in Politics, buisness, warfare, sports. Just look at the insurance companies.

I for one, predicted the future of a CEO I worked for, that his expantion in europe would fail, his internet would fail ..and he himself would fail. I was right in everything in a scaringly true way.
