Hydrogen does have possibilities for production at point-of-use. There are some good schemes for producing hydrogen from biological agents. I don't have the links right handy.
Hydrogen distribution doesn't look good at all. A tank truck full of hydrogen weighs 80,000 lbs,,, just like all normal over the road trucks. An empty H2 tank truck weighs 78,500 lbs. It can only carry 1500 lbs because the steel needed to contain the tiny H2 atom needs to be very dense. If you factor in a few hundred lbs for the fuel to power the truck, The net delivery is only <1200> lbs. New developments might change some of these parameters but, It doesn't look practical yet.
