A "nerd" is someone who is considered to be very smart and inquisitive while not being adept socially.

Bill Gates is a very famous "nerd".

There is a North American perception of a person who is academically gifted to be poorly co-ordinated, wearing glasses, wearing plastic pocket protector as a joke. A nerd is always portrayed as inept and mad hence the mad scientist eg. the Nutty Professor, Dr. Strangelove. However, with the emergence of Bill Gates as the richest man in America and nerds controlling major corporations nerds' image may change.
