Updated tracking forecast

Quote:
NHC is giving Cape Hatteras a 6% chance of receiving hurricane force winds. The main determinant of whether Earl hits the U.S. or not is a strong trough of low pressure predicted to move off the U.S. East Coast Friday. This trough, if it develops as predicted, should be strong enough to recurve Earl out to sea late in the week, with the storm just missing landfall in the U.S., but possibly making landfall in Nova Scotia, Canada. However, five day forecasts can be off considerably on the timing and intensity of such features, and it is quite possible that the trough could be delayed or weaker than expected, resulting in Earl's landfall along the U.S. East Coast. The most likely landfall locations would be North Carolina on Thursday or Friday, or Massachusetts on Friday or Saturday.

Earl grows to Category 4, new storm forms
Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico see heavy rain, wind; Fiona trails behind...

"Interests from North Carolina all the way to Maine should keep an eye on" Earl, said Jessica Schauer, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

...

The storm's forecast track would carry its center north of the Caribbean, then forecasters say it is likely to bend to the north, moving roughly parallel to the U.S. East Coast

I have these two white oaks in my yard. Each of them is so big that two adults hugging them cannot touch each others' fingers. Every three years since 1976 I get them thinned and fertilized. 2010 was on my calendar. The microburst storm we had six or eight weeks ago didn't impact me directly but the tree people fell way behind on doing jobs like mine. A lot of people had much more immediate work that needed attention.
They got to my trees on Friday and finished today. I use a company that is listed as "Certified Arborists." They take care of the trees at Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello. Expensive, but extremely well qualified.
I was stunned by how much thinning they did. Big limbs.
I am relieved they got that done before what is probably the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season.
Earl needs to take an abrupt right hand turn in the next several days.

@JPB,
The current projected path for Earl puts Long Island, southern NE, and the Maritime Provinces in the cross hairs.

@farmerman,
As much as I love Lewes, this is not the time to be there.

@JPB,
I have an email in to my cousin (a retired state trooper) who lives with her partner on a hilltop in Cape Cod. So far her house has survived 2 hurricanes over the years. She'll probably go eastward to her parent's house to ride out the storm.

@JPB,
I-98 is already TD #9 and will probably become TS Gaston soon.

In the meantime, Earl is now approaching FL and should begin his turn any time now. Any Time Now, EARL!!!!

@edgarblythe,
The 5:00 update just came out with a shift to the west in the overall track. The trough that is supposed to push Earl north and east is stalled over the midwest (tilting slightly, perhaps) but not moving east as quickly as originally thought. Also, Earl is speeding up a little bit. If he continues to accelerate and the trough continues to stall then the big push is going to happen later. He's also restrengthened to a Cat 4.

We already see Earl's cone of uncertainty covering the Outer Banks of NC, but now SE New England, including the Boston area, is back in the circle.

The next 12 -24 hours are key to see where he's going to turn. If he stays slow and gives the trough enough time to get unstuck then he'll curve as planned. If not, then a NC or Mass landfall is possible.
