@chai2,
Here's Wiki on Gerolsteiner, my favorite of the three mineral waters I mentioned. Squeeze some lemon, lime, or orange into it if you prefer.. or I suppose a little added gin wouldn't hurt. (I've not tried that)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerolsteiner

Adds, some mineral waters have very little in the way of minerals, so check out the brands.

Yes, well, there comes a point beyond which that loses its effect.
That is HELPFUL, but it has not disposed of the problem completely.
I also take Flomax, to assist the water out the other end.

A few years ago, I was afflicted by some kidney stones; strange sensation.
My urologist advised drinking plenty of water; I increased my intake.

@OmSigDAVID,
And, as someone mentioned earlier, check about all this with your doctor.

While there are many possible causes of "cramps", Mg deficiency is often associated with leg cramps. So...enrich your diet with more Mg -containing foods.

Perhaps a multivitamin will help. If not, consult an MD.

@OmSigDAVID,
Leg cramps are an involuntary contraction of a single muscle or a group of muscles in the leg. These are usually painful and extremely discomforting. Leg cramps often occur in elderly patients though age is no criteria as it is often seen in young people too. Leg cramps generally occur in the calf muscle, the hamstring and the quadriceps. The duration of a leg cramp ranges from less than a minute to several minutes at times.

Stretch the sore muscle, follow your instinct, your body will automatically guide you in the correct manner.

Massage the cramped muscle gently in the natural direction of the muscle. This helps relax the contraction and ease the pain.

A hot shower or warm bath is a good way to relax the muscle.

Use cold packs on the affected muscle. This relaxes the tensed muscles.

For a cramped calf muscle, stretch and massage the leg by straightening it and pointing the toes upward, towards the head.

Use a warm towel or heating pad to alleviate pain or tenderness following a cramp.

@OmSigDAVID,
There's Mg in those mineral waters above. I don't know if the minerals are in the proper amounts, versus a multivitamine, but work for me. You could google about Mg in foods. Or, best, see an m.d.

@ossobuco,
Adding, I want to push your meeting with an m.d. We don't know the variables of what is best to take in your situation, how minerals or too much of them can affect your particular health.

Good advice here.

Without knowing your regular exercise/food regimen it is hard for people to give the best advice. You may need to exercise more. You may need to exercise differently. You may need to change the foods you eat and when you eat them. You may need to change dietary supplements.

You need a doc to do a good work-up on you.

Thank u, Doctor. In furtherance of your advice,
I went to a drug store and bawt GNC Potassium & Magnesium Aspartate 250

"Monomagnesium Di-L -Aspartate 250 mg"
"Monopotasium Aspartate 250 mg"

I have had very good results from this.
It worked quickly, too, on an emergency basis.

Please accept my gratitude for your advice!

@OmSigDAVID,
I'm not going to mention mineral water a third time, you can listen or not. But foods matter - as many people said, bananas.

U are unimpressed with the pills ?

I got the beginnings of several cramps, in both legs, after a small amount of walking,
DURING that small amount of walking.
This was somewhat alarming.
I had gotten used to the idea that if I got a cramp,
stretching the affected muscle and walking woud end a leg cramp or foot cramp.

I was bringing the pills home from the drug store when cramps were beginning.
I took a pill; within maybe 20 minutes or half an hour
the threatening tensions ended. It left my legs feeling secure from cramps.
A day later, I felt like I shoud take another one; I did. It worked again.

120 capsules sold over the counter $14; sweet. It looks like the problem is over.
I had ordered some quinine pills on-line; presumably, thay r on the way.
I doubt that I will take them if the status quo remains stable.

I tried bananas quite a long time ago without effect,
otherwise the problem woud have been over maybe 20 years ago.
As a matter of fact, altho I am not much for vegitables,
I have something of a taste for broccoli and cheese dip
or with mayonnaise and I found that this increased the incidence of cramps. I wondered: "maybe too much potassium ??"

Please know that I am grateful for your generous effort to help, Osso.

UPDATE:

I have continued taking the Potassium & Magnesium pills,
as a dietary supplement (over-the-counter, no Rx),
with good effect, except that on a few occasions,
I got some threatening twinges of onset of cramps.

I have taken a quinine pill (over-the-counter, no Rx),
once or 2ice a day, continuing with ingestion of large amounts of water.

I understand that we r counselled to ingest 2 liters of water a day
for a variety of reasons (e.g., avoiding kidney stones).

Taking those Potassium & Magnesium pills
plus the said quinine pills, with plenty of water
over the course of the day has seen the end of these cramps.

OBVIOUSLY, u shoud consult with your medical doctor
in your applicable plans, concerning your own individual condition.
