A Different Slant on Iraq

President Bush smiles into the camera and says that we are making good progress in Iraq. Hello???????? Progress in what? Number of Americans killed? Yes, that is going quite well.

We are sure in a mess, and we are NOT making progress. Here's a British assessment of what is going on, and it appears to be a lot more realistic and honest than what the White House is handing out.

A Different Slant
No matter which version you read, it's not a pretty picture, that's for sure. Someone should sit George Bush down and make him read both of these articles. But then, you have to wonder if he would be capable of understanding what is going on. Rolling Eyes

I think timber et-al needs to read the David Rieff article before they espouse more GWBush rhetoric about how good things are going in Iraq.

shoes, he doesn't read the papers, remember? He "relies on his aides to tell him what he needs to know".

He'll never take responsibility for anything he does. He hasn't his whole life.

He will never admit a mistake, never say he was wrong, and never apologize. Ever. For anything.

That would be like saying God made a mistake, or lied. Evil or Very Mad

And that, of course, isn't possible.

Beside, GWBush claims god told him to run for president to help the American People.

shoesharper, you put those two articles together and they form a picture of a policy that has no direction, run by a clueless leadership, that has let the situation spin out of control.

You are kind to say there is any type of leadership in the current administration.

I am not an isolationist, but the situation in Iraq is indicative that it is truly out of the hands of our so-called "coalition."

Does anyone understand how on earth the Republican loyalists can possibly ignore the stench of what is going on in Iraq? Now they are beginning to crow about the economy, apparently in an effort to make us feel good. We're supposed to go out and buy a refrigerator and think what a great country this is. Rolling Eyes

The Republican economy cannot replace my present refrigerator. It costs enough money just to keep the thing stocked with food. I'm hardly in a position to replace it, especially since I know it would mean one small boost for Dubya.

shoe, The US is a great country. We just happen to have an administration that seeks to destroy our military and federal budget for the citizens of another country that never was a threat to the US - much less the world. We have succeeded in awaking the terrorist giant in Iraq, and our military folks are paying the high price for it. It's a quagmire (sp) that will not disappear in 2004 with this administration. We would have lost many unnecessary lives and billions of taxpayer money that seems hopelessly a long-term committment. As many experts will tell you and me that you cannot transplant a democracy in another country that does not seek it or want it.

Your last sentence says it all. And didn't we say just that many times over before the war?
