I've read about Etna before but in passing, not know about the local stuff.

Whitley Bay is the nearest seaside resort to my childhood home in Newcastle-upon-Tyne - only a few miles down the road. Stunning beaches for miles and miles - makes me homesick to see it again!

Ah-ha. Nothing quite like that here. It's a lot warmer than it should be, considering that it's almost January, but not much precipitation. There was snow a couple of weeks ago, but we should be under several inches of it at this time of year.
