@Amigo,
Cute cute story but I question if it is anything other then an error with the library records keeping dating back to 1789.

First books were far far more costly and valuable during that time period then they are now and so president or not there would had been letters send to Washington over this matter and other indication that those two books where indeed missing from the collection.

I didn't think about that. But he was the founder, maybe they just turned a blind eye.

It is unlikely that we will ever know for sure one way or another but it is a cute story and I thank you for posting it.
