Please see this English text...
Concerned about the wildfires in western Nevada, state officials are urging residents in adjacent regions to evacuate their homes, travel upwind of the wildfires, equipping children with breathing masks to filter any harmful toxins.
Please look at this text ...travel upwind of the wildfires
what does 'upwind' means ?
is it toward the wind ?
or
opposite to the wind ?
I'm getting both meaning in the wordweb ...confused which is correct.
@tintin,
If you are "upwind" of an object, the wind is blowing from you to them. If you are "downwind" of an object, the wind is blowing from the object to you.
You want to be upwind of a fire so the fire moves away from you, but you'd rather tbe downwind of a dangerous animal so the wind doesn't carry your scent to the animal.
