In all honesty, I think Dr. Phil utilizes common sense and objectivity with an appealing personality. I really wish my granny of 90 would unglue herself from this show, especially about teens! I'm shocked that she even takes a shower because you might fall in the tub and crack your head.
I don't think Dr. Phil offers any advice a friend couldn't. He isn't shy about saying what is on his mind without hurting feelings, as friends may. Every time I have watched his show, it seems so obvious what the problem is. I have him down before the commercial break is over!
I feel like I am stupid even watching his show of obvious and easy problems. No one is objective about ourselves or ones we care about. We are way too emotionally involved. Any good friend who is honest could easily give the same exact advice that Dr. Phil does. If I can predict a response by casual viewing, I am very sure that others can as well, except my grandma!
Common sense solved in a few minutes is what he offers. Big deal!

The big deal is common sense isn't very common.
This is especially true when you are very close to a situation.
I think Dr. Phil is sucessful because he is blunt and says what we all wish we could say to our friends and family that are in situations like the ones on his show. Some people need to be hit on the side of the head, some need to be treated with kid gloves to get the same message.
I do find myself now asking friends the question "How's that working for you?"
I have to agree completely, Tim! It really is a sad thing to say about society. I don't guess people have too many more friends than I do. Is it The American Way that we all live to go to work and isolate ourselves with technology?
Living in my neighborhood, where neighbors will only bother to give you a quick, "Hi.", with only polite intent, not a offer of friendship at all, I think many of us live in isolation with no one but our immediate surroundings.
If Dr. Phil offers common sense to society, then maybe he really does have something to offer after all. I never claimed that anyone can see themselves or people we care about objectively, but real friends can and will tell you things you may not want to hear. They do this only because they care, no other reason at all.
Do we have true friends anymore? I don't. I am guessing that I am not as out of the norm as I thought of myself. Is it true that we live isolated as a culture? It probably is and I feel this isn't good, although we do live with the money our work gives us and nothing else. I do guess we need a dose of common sense since no one will be friend enough to give it to us.
No wonder we are all neurotic!

same here. He comes across as a goober know- it- all. The fact that my ex loves him makes it easy for me to detest him even more. Dr Phil worships at the shrine of Oprah. Grow a spine for chrissakes!
Oh yes, I remember this show. She got a day away from home and the kids and got great products like washers and dryers, refrigerators and ranges. I didn't realize it went into 1964.
Not a fan of Dr Phil. I think he's a total sham. Nothing personal to folks who enjoy his show, but good googley moogley. He has that diet book, but he's pudgy himself.
To me, he comes across as a charlatan with a college degree. People who need psychological help should not expect to solve their life problems watching a daytime TV show. And now he's trying to drum up a show for his wife. What does his wife do? Nada. She shows up with him every now and then. Why should I pay attention to his wife when I don't pay attention to Dr Laura? I luv how Letterman totally punks on him. As does Stern LOL
Dr Phil is high on my fight card. Makes me think of a modern day version of that HBO show Carnivale.
Dr. Phil Families
I must say, that I started watching Dr. Phil after recording it during the day because I work. I don't normally get into the daytime things, but he seemed to be okay. I like his book on weight loss. I am starting to have some real issues though with these families. All of a sudden the show seems like it is getting a Maury Povich type of entertainment. Has anyone ever stopped to think about these families? Are they really actual families or are they staged? I would hate to think that he would stoop to that level. Think about it, no last names for the families, no town where they live. If all of this was going on for real, doesn't anyone think that these kids would be upset because other kids are giving them a bad time at school. It seems like there would be neighbors sending messages into the message boards about what they know about either one of the families. With all that is going on with this family with Stacy & Chris, doesn't anyone think that the Mormon Church would have called them on the carpet for their actions. It is starting to seem like these are set up families.
As a licensed mental health provider, I take this guy as a joke. We must not forget, his license to practice was revoked for inappropriate conduct with a client. He has only one style of counseling, that is confronting. While that is a tool in the bag of counseling, it is not the only one. and if used at the wrong time, can be damaging. People state he helps people who can't get help. That is BS. Many therapists work on a sliding scale and free if need be. I am sure if you check any of the state licensing sites, you will find how many complaints and actions have been filed against this guy. As of now, he is NOT licesnsed to practice anywhere, so why do people view him as some qualified therapist. How many of those same people would go to an unlicensed doctor or dentist. Not a one. The real proof that he is NOT any therapsit or counselor lies in the fact that he often abuses and yells at his guests. That goes against any ethical conduct standards for the profession. At all times, we have to remain objective and ensure the dignity of the person. It angers me that the American viewing public is so stupid to believe in this guy.
I love Dr. Phil and Oprah.
More power to them.
Hehe, he does....who is that other guy, where have I seen him before? Thanks for the pics...too funny!!
gallagher is a comedian best known for smashing watermelons with the sledge-o-matic...
Lol...ok....thanks for the link!
Dr Phil special on right now. I love it.
You'd never guess I was studying for a test right now. (sigh)
How about
The Black Gallagher ? Click the forward to pass the ad...
WOW!! I never received these great replies to my own topic! Phil sorta looks like Gallagher, but, Gallagher tries to look goofy while his publicist tries to make Phil look wise yet sexy.
Does anyone get the dry heaves watching Dr. Phil?
Actually, a recent Dr. Phil Show, entitled, "Kids Ask Dr. Phil" would make an excellent vehicle for discussing several issues with teenagers. I recommended it to the woman who teaches Young Adult Living and to the guidance counsellors at AHS.
