Michigan Militia Group Charged With Police-Killing Plot
AP
The FBI conducted weekend raids in three states and arrested eight people tied to a Michigan-based militia group that authorities say was conspiring to kill police officers.

WASHINGTON -- Nine suspects tied to a militia in the Midwest are charged with conspiring to kill police officers, then attack a funeral in the hopes of killing more law enforcement people, federal prosecutors said Monday.

U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said agents moved on the group because the Hutaree members were planning a violent reconnaissance mission sometime in April -- just a few days away.

Members of the group called Hutaree are charged in the case, including their leader, David Brian Stone, also known as "Captain Hutaree."

Once other officers gathered for a slain officer's funeral, the group planned to detonate homemade bombs at the funeral, killing more, according to newly unsealed court papers.

The indictment includes charges of seditious conspiracy, possessing a firearm during a crime of violence, teaching the use of explosives, and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction -- homemade bombs.

The indictment charges members of the group conspired "to levy war against the United States, (and) to oppose by force the authority of the government of the United States."

The charges follow FBI raids over the weekend on locations in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

According to investigators, the purportedly Christian Hutaree militia view local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel as a "brotherhood" and an enemy, and planned to attack them as part of an armed struggle against the U.S. government.

Eight suspects have been arrested by the FBI, and one more is being sought. Of the eight captured, seven are due in court later Monday.

Andrew Arena, head of the FBI's field office in Detroit, said the case "is an example of radical and extremist fringe groups which can be found throughout our society. The FBI takes such extremist groups seriously, especially those who would target innocent citizens and the law enforcement officers who protect the citizens of the United States."

@djjd62,
Aw, shucks, they just agree with our own OmSig that the relationship between the government and the citizens is adversarial. So it makes perfectly good sense to plan and off some of these minions of an unjust government.

Looked for more information & this is what I found in a local (Oz) newspaper.
Very frightening:

Quote:
....They had allegedly been training since at least 2008 and planned to kill a law enforcement officer and then attack the funeral with home-made bombs.

They would then retreat to one of several "rally points" to "wage war against the Government and be prepared to defend in depth with trip-wired and command detonated anti-personnel Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), ambushes, and prepared fighting positions," the charging document said.

"It is believed by the Hutaree that this engagement would then serve as a catalyst for a more widespread uprising against the Government," the indictment said.

Prosecutors said a weekend raid on militia members in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana was necessary because the group planned to kill anyone who got in the way of a "covert reconnaissance operation" planned for April.

Eight of the militia members were arrested, but the leader's son - Joshua Stone - is considered a fugitive.

"The indictment unsealed today outlines an insidious plan by anti-government extremists to murder a law enforcement officer in order to lure police from across the nation to the funeral where they would be attacked with explosive devices," Attorney General Eric Holder said.

"Thankfully, this alleged plot has been thwarted and a severe blow has been dealt to an dangerous organisation that today stands accused of conspiring to levy war against the United States." .....

.....The number of extremist groups and armed militias which advocate radical anti-government doctrines and conspiracy theories nearly tripled last year to 512 from 149 in 2008, according a recent report by to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks the activities of hate groups.

The militia members face charges of seditious conspiracy, attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, teaching the use of explosive materials and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence....

Well good for them, Joe!

So they're a respectable organization & their findings (& stats) on the rise of hate crimes can be taken pretty seriously then.
Sounds a much bigger problem & much more serious problem than just Michigan!

(OK, I've done my bit of Googling & learning more about the US for today. I hope I didn't divert your thread from its intended purpose, djjd. Please continue now ...)

I'm just curious when the GOP members of congress are going to start demanding these people be tried in military courts.

@parados,
Probably never because in their hearts, the members of the GOP think these people are on to something.

@Merry Andrew,
My problem with them is that they tend to be very very over reaching in labeling groups they do not care for as hate groups.

They do need in my opinion to narrow their focus somewhat or loss all credibility.

Yeah, you're probably right. But isn't that true of all special interest groups? Constant vigilance and all that.

@Merry Andrew,
If only home made bombs were illegal to own/build, then this stuff would never happen. I mean, it's just like firearms, if those were all illegal to own then there'd be no more murders or bad things happening, ever.

I support making bombs illegal to own by private citizens (and police for that matter).
