I'm such a bitch.

I have a pet fish, and on Wednesday it was looking pretty sorry for itself, and not having fed it for a while I fed it a bit, and then thought I might clean it out the next day, but then was to lazy, and now it is dead.
I want to be sad that it is dead but all I can be sad about is that I didn't bother enough with it and therefore am horrible.
Why do I have such little empathy and why am I so self obsessed?

You are allowed another ten minutes of beating yourself up about this.

Meanwhile, clean the tank and equipment very, very well and wait for awhile before getting any more pets.

I let to finches die when I was a child. I didn't do a good job of taking care of them. I felt awful.

Sorry about the fish PQ. We learn lessons the hard way sometimes.

@The Pentacle Queen,
Don't beat yourself too hard!
You probably never had any animals to take care of, right?
At least you start the right way with a fish that needs very little attention
and even then it can happen. Very few people haven't found the pet goldfish floating at the surface when starting out. It does happen!!

To ease your conscience you could volunteer at the local animal shelter -
that would be a good deed and take your mind of yourself a bit.

I recall that you've let on that you're an only child. See dlowan's narcissism thread.

Thanks guys. I mean, I think about stuff so abstractly- it's probably the reason I don't care... I just feel like I should care.
Ironically I was making a fish finger sandwich when I found out it was dead. That's confusing.

Um CJ- I've had loads of pets, I'm just **** at looking after them...

@The Pentacle Queen,
No no no PQ. It was his goldfish karma. He must have done something really bad to you in his last life when you both were glow worms.

@The Pentacle Queen,
Well, if you've had loads of pets already and you don't look after them,
perhaps you should not have any in the (near) future.

Seaglass: there is a book called "Bad Karma" from David Safier - it's not out in English yet (release June 2010); pretty funny
Quote:
This debut novel by David Safier follows the trials and tribulations of Kim Karlsen, a television personality whose career obsession brings her some serious cosmic repercussions. In her quest to dominate the airwaves, Kim cheats on her husband, neglects her daughter, and mistreats her staff. It all seems worth it when she wins the biggest German Television Award, but sadly on the very same night she is crushed to death by debris falling from a Russian space station. At the gates of Heaven, she is informed that she has collected too much bad karma in her life, and has a long road of atonement ahead. Reincarnation as an ant teaches her a few lessons in humility, and she experiences existence as a guinea pig and as a beagle before regaining human form just in time to sabotage the marriage of her husband to her back-stabbing best friend.

@Sglass,
It is delightful, especially when the main character becomes an ant in her
reincarnation and meets up with Casanova (also an ant).
