Studies show that the double-jointed digits of the Mandarin Ferret evolved to assist it in obtaining fruit from its sole food source, the New Zealand Banananut tree.

I don't understand this double-jointed digits of the Mandarin Ferret

what does 'double-jointed digits' mean ?

who is 'Mandarin Ferret' ?

I think in this case, 'digit' = 'finger'. 'Mandarin' ferret appears to be a particular type of ferret.

From Wiki:

"...finger bones (phalanges) the 3rd phalanx has a claw-like process on the end to support the nail - five digits front and back"

@tintin,
digits means fingers, it is what medical professionals call fingers

double- jointed fingers = unusually flexible fingers

Ferret is an Animal, and Mandarin is the specific breed or type that it is.

>>double- jointed fingers

is there any picture of this ? I am not sure how they look . the keyword "joint" is misleading ...I'm thinking two fingers are joined ...is it like that ?

@tintin,
The joints in your fingers only bend in one direction -- toward the palm of your hand. A double-jointed finger can bend in the opposite direction as well

The passage appears to be fictional. There is no such animal as a mandarin ferret and no such tree as the New zealand bannannut tree.
i just wanted to be sure you understood that. Your enquiry is still valid.

@JPB,
Oh my God , pretty interesting to know that those animal's joints can bent both ways !

Is there any other animal who has this kind double-jointed finger? Does this help to run faster ?
