my shih tzu is 4 years old, and we moved to new apartment, and everytime we leave he scratches at door all day. and when i get home, carpet is tore up and his paws are bleeding... even if i block the door way, he tore up my new couch... some one please tell me how to get him to stop, he just keeps hurting himself more and more everyday, and i have to go to work.
It sounds like separation anxiety. I've attached a link that might be helpful. You could also consider getting another dog. Dogs are pack animals and prefer to have another animal around to feel secure. They will also entertain each other.

You might also want to have a talk with your vet. In some extreme cases you can use medication.
