In my schooldays we didn't have this method of pronunciation and I haven't a clue how it works for example,

I know how to pronounce this name, P.G.Wodehouse, but this method below means nothing to me.

Wodehouse, (pronounced /ˈwʊdhaʊs/)

Would someone please enlighten my darkness?
