@OmSigDAVID,
So, would it be fair and accurate to say that democrats are more dangerous than Al-Qaeda?

@dyslexia,
You've got two on your own block. What do you think?

Two Republicans, I mean. Uncounted members of al qaeda.

I, like you, have seen that our country is being destroyed. I mean, this is -- every generation has had to fight the fight for freedom. This is our fight. And this is our time. This is it. Terrorism, yes -- but that's not the big battle. The big battle is in D.C., with the radicals. They aren't liberals, they're radicals. Obama, Pelosi, Walz -- they're not liberals, they're radicals. They are destroying our country. And people all over are figuring that out."
Allen Quist, a Republican candidate seeking the nomination to go up against Rep. Tim Walz (D-MN)

We are as polarized today as the year Lincoln was elected. I don't think you can dialog it to mutuall tolerance. The ballot box is the best weapon.

@dyslexia,
People with your kind of thinking that turn fellow citizens into enemies for daring to have another outlook are indeed far more dangerous to our future then Al-Qaeda.

We need to turn down the nonsense and heat on all sides of the political landscape.

@BillRM,
Really. Next time I'm in Albuquerque, I'll probably have to go through a metal detector, and get approval from Sally, the bomb sniffing dog. Fortunately, I anticipate her approval.

Djjd2 we have a long and sad history of looking at our fellow citizens as the worst kinds of devils.

This condition, date back to the very first days of the Republic with the hate between Hamilton and Jefferson and their two parties.

Obama is the anti-Christ and not even a citizen at that.

On the other side there are large numbers who view the Bush administration leaderships as war criminals and wish to turn the justice department on them.

We had so far in spite of this level of nonsense held together as a country with only one civil war.

Could be because we hate the rest of the world more then each other and sometimes for good reasons.

I haven't seen a whole lot of Republicans going about with bombs strapped to their bodies.

@dyslexia,
Not an accuate statement. Republicans are petty motherf*****s, but then again so are Democrats. They're all in bed with one another anyway. They're not out to directly kill us, they're taking the long route.

Your logic is screwed up, Gala.
The statement is:
"republicans are more dangerous than Al-Qaeda";
it says nothing qua Democrats, nor about pettiness nor about incest.

It probably is -- mostly because you're setting your bar so low. After all, Al Quaeda isn't all that dangerous in the grand schemes of things. Many everyday hazards are more dangerous than Al Quaeda, even though we don't lose any sleep on these.

For example, cars kill more people than Al Quaeda by running over them. Guns kill more people in accidents than Al Quaeda. In turn, as the NRA correctly points out, swimming pools kill more people than guns do, meaning that swimming pools are more dangerous than Al Quaeda, too. Finally, businesses let more of their employees die in work accidents than terrorists kill in their plots. I could extend the list considerably.

With all of the above in mind, my best guess is that Republicans are probably just a little more dangerous than terrorists. By opposing safety regulations for swimming pools, guns, and workplaces, they probably cause more Americans to die than terrorists do. But not many more. As I said, terrorists are easy to beat in a competition for dangerousness.

@Thomas,
Terrorists are more dangerous simply because they can't be voted out of office.

Not accurate, but probably fair.

It's silly to compare Republicans or Democrats with Al-Qaeda but as groups both have a greater ability, probablistically, to negatively affect American lives than do Jihadis.

So when someone argues that either political party represents a greater threat to our way of life than Al-Qaeda they're not being unfair, but only if they argue that Democrats pose the greatest threat are they being accurate.

As far as the threat of Islamists (or generic terrorists, if you prefer) Thomas seems to be on a mission to underestimate it.

While it certainly is true that all people, and not just Americans, are very poor evaluators of risk, the threat of Islamists extends far beyond a suicide bomber in a plane or mall.

One need only consider 9/11 to appreciate the depth and breath of the danger they pose.

Aside from the not insignificant fact that almost 3,000 people died in pretty horrible ways, America suffered from the attack, and in ways contemplated and intended by the Islamists.

In no particular order:

The stock market crashed. Vast amounts of wealth were lost and numerous business were shut down. Many, many Americans lost their jobs as a result.

Americans sense of security and well being were seriously rocked and while it's tough to quantify such damage, anyone living in America at the time would have had to be secluded in a cave not to have experienced and acknowledge it.

America went to war in Afghanistan and Iraq and the cost in terms of treasure, human life and national unity have been significant.

I'm sure others can add to this list, but it's pretty impressive as is.

Look at the impact an unsuccessful terrorist attack has had and imagine how much greater it would have been if the crotch bomb had exploded over Detroit.

Imagine an Al-Qaeda nuclear strike and you can multiply the impact of 9/11 by a factor of at least 10. A collapse of the US economy would not be out of the question.

Oh, but what are the odds you will personally be killed by an Islamist? Your odds for being eaten by a shark are probably greater. So stop worrying about terrorists, they are simply the means by which evil Conservatives try to manipulate you.

Unfortunately, the Islamists appreciate the threat they present far more accurately than Thomas and those who agree with his poo pooing of the danger, and they will keep trying to wreck it upon America and the West if they are not crushed.
