Code red fire warning issued for first time
SELMA MILOVANOVIC AND KATE LAHEY
January 10, 2010 - 7:42PM Victoria Aust.

A total fire ban has been declared for the entire state of Victoria for tomorrow.

Conditions are expected to be most dangerous in the Wimmera where Victoria’s first code red catastrophic day has been declared.

The Country Fire Authority says all national state parks and forests in the district will be closed, in the interest of public safety.

The CFA says fire danger is considered extreme in the Mallee, North Central, Western and Central districts including Melbourne

Temperatures are expected to hit 44 degrees in the Mallee, North Central, Central and Western districts, while Melbourne will see the mercury ‘‘rocket’’ to 40 degrees (104 F) by midday and push towards 45 (113 F) degrees during the afternoon.
Senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said scorching northerly winds will freshen throughout the afternoon, contributing to the high fire danger.

‘‘Wind has an enormous impact on fire danger, and that’s why the highest fire dangers will be over the west today,’’ he said.

Melbourne, meanwhile, is being warned the mercury could hit a blistering 45 degrees.

‘‘From nine o’clock onwards, the temperature will rocket from 20 degrees up to 40 degrees by midday and then peak about 43 degrees later in the afternoon. We could even sneak a 44 or 45 degrees, ’’ Mr Carlyon said.

@dlowan,
We didn't get a terrific amount, either.

But the dramatic drop in temperature ... a heaven sent relief!

You know, you could go nuts with a couple of weeks of days like the past 2! Seriously. Wink

@msolga,
I know!

It's weird....I was ok in that weeks long heat wave we had last summer...this summer much shorter ones have really got to me.

Why?

Dunno.

I think it is maybe the whole warming thing.

So many trees are dying....so many are dead.

Wettest summer in four years
PETER KER AND DEWI COOKE
February 13, 2010.the AGE

MELBOURNE has enjoyed its wettest summer in four years, with this week's storm adding to an encouraging six months of rain.

Thursday's downpour delivered up to 50 millimetres to some parts of Melbourne and cut off power to about 40,000 customers in the city's west.

About 11,000 customers were still without power yesterday and more wild weather is expected in coming days.

Weatherzone analysis shows that about 132 millimetres has fallen since the start of December - easily the most rain since late 2005 and early 2006.

The combined rainfall for the past six months of spring and summer also shows the best result in four years, with 329 millimetres.

Those results, taken from the Melbourne city gauge, are even more encouraging as there are still more than two weeks remaining in February.

The results are a remarkable turnaround from the first half of last year, when Melbourne recorded its driest first six months to a year on record.

Despite the improvement, the falls are not remarkable in a historical context - the 329 millimetres over the past six months is still below the long-term average for that period. ... <cont>

Just in time for dishonest John to turn on the tap and start ripping off water from the north east where it's really needed.

3A water restrictions? ????????

I don't blame you in the least, dadpad. I feel exactly the same.

(John Brumby is the Premier of the state of Victoria. Dapad might tell you more about the the various "water diversions" from the country areas to the city of Melbourne, if he likes.)

You folk in the country are paying very heavily for the gigantic population spurt taking place Melbourne. ( The health of your rivers, the impact on wildlife, the impact on country towns..... It's outrageous. )
