Yeah...we had people prepared to band together and struggle

You guys have lousy holidays, but you'd need to acknowledge

Yeah; maybe. Here, we usually start off new on a job
with 2 weeks a year of paid vacation and about 10 holidays
totaling 4 work weeks off a year. As time passes with seniority
on a job, most of the time there are added weeks of vacation time,
with the number of legal holidays remaining constant,
e.g. Christmas, New Year 's Day, George Washington 's Birthday, the 4th of July, etc.

I know in the middle of a heat wave the cold sounds delish... but after weeks of the cold, and yes snow, it gets a wee bit tiresome. The roads are sheer ice but I'm loving the blue moon!! I'm in Edmonton at the moment, I go back to Vancouver in a few more days and then it will be a balmy 5 or so Celsius with plenty of rain ;().
It's going to be a very cold new years eve but it should be lots of fun. We are going to a dueling piano bar with a large group of friends. I hope you Ozzies are having a blast this evening. On to 2010...

@OmSigDAVID,
You forgot to mention that not a single one of those holidays is required to be given or paid for. Vacations? Yep, lots of jobs have paid vacations, usually one or two weeks after one year. Not saying this is wrong in a free market, but I believe you are giving the wrong impression.

I did not address the issue of REQUIREMENTS.
As a practical description of the de facto state of affaris, for the most part:
I stand by what I said.

@Tai Chi,
There was little traffic this morning, so instead of arriving a bit late (as planned), I arrived early!

Foiled again!

The last few new years I've missed my dog barking at all the midnight noisemaking, and will this year again too. Solution: start barking myself, quietly of course. Maybe put on some good barking or howling music...

@ossobuco,
It does happen to be one of those very special blue moons tonight - perfect for howling.

I was thinking the same thing -- noddy watching over us all as we ring in the new year.

@JPB,
Yes - I'll raise a tea and brandy to Noddy tonight - and think of her bourbon and branch.

U coud RENT a pooch for a while,
so long as u attend to him properly with appropriate
New Year 's snacks, Filet Mingnion, Lobster,
Pate Foie Gras, caviar, etc. for your guest to compensate him for his howling.
