@littlek,
I remember Mexico as homophobic - haven't been there in a while (but wait, I am from the US, what am I saying), but don't have a finger on the pulse of this very large city. I'm pleased to read this.
@ossobuco,
It's Catholic - that it passed this bill shows what? It's also a major international city? And, is is such a force that it can pass a law like this as a city? Have we had any cities do that? San Fran?
@littlek,
I dunno, hope fbaezer checks in..
(oh, and that is what I meant about 'wait a minute' re us.)
@ossobuco,
That's totally unexpected.
I'll murmur that catholics vary in belief and practice.
Or, maybe no one in town votes.
@ossobuco,
I'm an extremely ex catholic (getting less enraged), non gay, long interested in Mexico, woman from California..
Interesting step taken here.
Well, legal gay unions were legalized a couple of years ago.
So, gay marriage wasn't far.
The big discussion here was about adoption rights.
The majority of the population supported gay marriage, but not adoption by a gay couple. Nevertheless, it passed.
The conservative party says it'll try to make it unconstitutional. They tried to make abortion unconstitutional when Mexico City aproved it. But our Supreme Court said it was constitutional, because it upheld the woman's right.
There's another Mexican state, Coahuila, that has aproved gay unions (but Mexico City is the first on gay marriage).
Expect many Mexican states to officially declare that marriage is between a man and a woman. Happened with abortion, after the Mexico City legalization, 17 states have put the unborn rights on their constitutions.
As for normal life in this city, I'd say this is the only place in the world in which I have often seen two men (or two women) kissing and even making out in the subway or in the streets.
About 4 years ago, an woman was walking by with her grandson (aged 5, perhaps) and on the other side there was a group of oh so evidently gay boys. The woman tried to have the little boy avoid the sight and tried to cross to the other side of the street. The kiddie then said:
"Oh granny, don't be scared of them, they're only gays".
In the sixties, when this was a big jail disguised as a country, if you were a boy and had long hair, cops would get you and cut your hair with scissors in the middle of the street, so you wouldn't "look like a broad".
The city's come a long way, babe.
@fbaezer,
Quote:The city's come a long way, babe.
It certainly sounds that way, fbaezer!
How enlightened.
Congratulations!
@fbaezer,
Quote:"Oh granny, don't be scared of them, they're only gays".
Out of the mouths of babes.
