Break down what?
Context:
This could help unravel the brain activity underlying the process of "joint attention", thought to be key to complex, human social interactions. It could also offer insights into why social interactions can break down for people with autism.

@oristarA,
'Break down' as in 'become nonfunctional'.
When a car breaks down, you can't drive it. When social interactions break down, they are not working correctly or resulting in a desired purpose, which is usually communication or a relationship of some sort. These are often very difficult and sometimes impossible for people with autism to participate in or achieve.
