Just because some describe soccer/football as the beautiful game doesn't necessarily make it true. By the same token, the statement above is true if the person who spoke it believes it to be so.

Of course it doesn't, whether something is beautiful or not is altogether a matter of opinion, but it is a matter of fact that the phrase is in very common usage in the non-US part of the Anglophone world.
