just now watching the telly. a gunman with a rifle has taken a hostage in a high school in upstate new york. David should be along any minute to explain why the gunman should have been carrying a handgun instead of a rifle.
ah good, it now appears that the gunman has surrendered without shooting anyone.

@Diest TKO,
is november gun nut awareness month in the us?
@djjd62,
Details are tight. They are saying this is a "possible hostage situation."
They have big guns and everything is locked down... I don't think this commotion is coming from somebody with a sling shot.

JEFFERSON CITY - Portions of downtown Jefferson City are shut down due to a possible hostage situation in a government building.
State employees in the building say police officers are outside patroling the area with assault rifles. The area is locked down. Follow KOMU online and on Twitter for updates.
A viewer called KOMU to say a hostage situation took place in the Governor's Building on Madison Street. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder is sending accounts from his Twitter account saying snipers are on the roof of the Jefferson Building and negotiators are on the scene to speak with a suspect in the hostage situation.

UPDATE: I just found out that I know someone who is locked down in the building. I have no idea if they are in immediate harm or simply locked down at the moment.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Law enforcement agencies say they have not been able to confirm they had a hostage situation at the Governor Office Building on Tuesday morning.
Capt. Mike Smith of the Jefferson City Police Department briefed reporters about 11:30 a.m. that a call came in after 10 a.m., saying an automated alarm in the building indicated a hostage situation was under way on the fifth floor of the building.
Smith said authorities have checked with people who work on the fifth floor and other floors and that no problems have been reported. Smith emphasized no shots have been fired at the site and no one is hurt.
The Missouri Public Service Commission has offices on the fifth floor, but it's not known if its offices were involved.
SWAT and tactical squads are on site, Smith said. They will be going through the building floor by floor to check the identification of those they find in the offices. Smith said it would take some time to clear the building.
The building, at Madison Street and East Capital Avenue, originally was the Governor Hotel and was renovated by the state about 10 years ago.
Authorities are asking those in buildings around the office building to stay in their buildings and off the streets as authorities clear the building.
Smith was asked if Gov. Jay Nixon was at the Governor's Mansion, which is across the street from the office building. He is out of town, Smith said
