According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game:
while both the male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December.
Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.
Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl....and pregnant at that!
We should've known.....
ONLY women would be able to drag a man in a red suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.
Ho Ho Ho and Happy Christmas!
Well then that silly man in the red suit should think about changing some names, don't you think?
Possibly. I don't know why Blitzen couldn't be female!
Let's see, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen... plus Rudolph. Vixen is definitely female! Donner does seem a bit masculine, but ... would work!
Really most of those are fine... just change Cupid and Rudolph to.... what do you think???
We need new names for two reindeer, but they need to scan well!
I suppose Cupid could become Venus since she was supposedly his Mommy anyway. But Rudolph is a bit of a problem. Actually Rudolph always looked a bit feminine in the tv show anyway. Maybe we could just shorten it to Rudi and that would make it okay.
I think maybe Blitzen needs a change, too, but it could just be me.
Hmmm. I don't know. Venus doesn't quite scan as well. We need a sort of short and clipped ending... Cricket?
Rudolph?? Actually I think since he was so young, maybe he didn't need antlers?
Blitzen? I guess that name reminds me of Isak Dinesen, don't ask me why, so it seemed feminine. (Karen Blitzen??? That name just came to me -- was that a related name?)
Let's see, Comet and Cricket. Sounds good, consider it done.
Heee Heeee.
I wouldn't mind changing Rudolph's, but I am at a loss. Need one of those baby name books!
Here's a link to some baby names:

I vote for Rachel, if you're gonna stick with 'r' cause it sounds kind of like Rudolph so the song wouldn't have to be changed too much.
And you need the 'r' for the alliteration.
Rachel? Great. I'm singing it now, I think it works well. It needs that quick ending and Rachel has it.
You are good, v. good.
Maybe we should work on Donner? Though I kind of like the idea of a woman thundering!!!
Donner is fine -- we can just tell folks it's a variation of the spelling of Donna.
Oh! Good idea. An Arctic variant?
So it's Rachel, the Red-Nosed Reindeer...
and...
On Dasher, On Dancer, On Prancer and Vixen, On Comet, On Cricket (maybe this should be Kewpie?), On Donner & Blitzen.
No, Cricket has really grown on me already. Kewpie reminds me of the old Kewpie dolls which looked nothing like reindeer.
Alright, Cricket she is!
Yay. Now remember... if you see children over the next few weeks... this must be carefully explained to them.
Rachel and Cricket, the newest names on the roof!
