Dorothy died on 9th August 1982, and was buried next to her sister. In an obituary she was described as ‘an active champion of the cause of children’s reading …In particular, she campaigned against the middle-class image and appeal of books; she believed in books for all children.’

Does it mean that she was against the prevalent view of writing children's books for middle class children only, and to cater to their appeal only?

@fansy,
To campaign means to actively work for or against something. She was not just against (opposed mentally) to the middle class image and appeal of books, she actually did things to widen the appeal of books. The word 'active' is another clue.
