If a scholar is talented, yet he could not find the right place to put what he learnt to use, can we say: he could not find the proper field to wield the power of his talent?

You could, but it sounds rather silly nowadays" the 'wield the power of' part, I mean. Something like this is less flamboyant:

He could not find the proper field to use his talent effectively.
