If your working on a 14 to 17" laptop, yes those long links do stretch the screen. I can reiterate that on the post reply screen (not the Quick Reply), there is a URL button where you can enter those long addresses and then give them a title.

Actually, I'm now on my 17" laptop at home and it's not stretching the screen. What resolution is your screen set for? Mine is 1024 x 768. That's doesn't change the protocol to use the URL on links, especially long links. I have had it stretch the screen before and the poster has corrected it. I've done it on images and then removed them.
