Question about private messages...

Reply Mon 5 Oct, 2009 09:55 am
I received a very strange PM today from someone with no posting history on A2K. I thought you had to be a member for a while before getting the ability to PM.

Just curious.

Thanks!

@boomerang,
No such restrictions, and no current way to report the spam either. But in the future the restriction I think makes the most sense is to allow members to reject messages from people not on their friend list (which is also not currently available).

@Robert Gentel,
Thanks, Robert.

If only it was spam I wouldn't bother asking, I'd just delete it. This was some links to some disturbing video. It kind of freaked me out.

@sozobe,
Yes, soz. That's the one. I didn't mention it because I didn't want to give him any publicity.

@boomerang,
If you don't mind, please contact us to report the spam (even the less disturbing stuff) till there's a report function. That way we can stop the user before they spam more users.

Sounds like someone's targeting women.

How do I report a private message, Robert?

Interesting, DrewDad. I have no idea why s/he thought to send this to women only since it seems to be genderless propaganda. I only watched about a minute of it so I could be wrong.

@boomerang,
I think he means through the help desk here: http://support.able2know.com/index.php?_m=tickets&_a=submit

I got that from the "Contact Us" link at the bottom.

@boomerang,
Right now there's no report function, so please just use the contact us form and include the message and the username. We'll make a message report function in the future.

The spammer probably wasn't targeting women, just going through active threads to find usernames to spam.

Thanks Free Duck and Robert. That's what I'll do if it ever happens again.

@Merry Andrew,
I am feeling left out (and I have a prurient curiosity). Could someone let us know the gist of it?

@ebrown p,
I didn't click on anything but it was basically a regular post of a type you've seen before but as a private message instead of a post... something about Iraq and links to videos. I figured there would probably be dead and dismembered children and such. The general tone seemed to be "war is bad."

It was proported to be footage of Iraqi insurgents blowing up American troops.

Like I said, I only watched about one minute of it so there might be more to the story. I'm not posting the links.

I'm sooooo leary of opening links that haven't been provided by someone that isn't known here.

I opened one within the last year, and I still become nauseous when I think of it. I'd asked the hamsters to remove it, it was so horrible. Unfortunatley, they couldn't because the person providing the link gave a warning of grahic content.
