There isn't a lot online re the samurai sword incident, but I did find: "July 1986. Juan Gonzales, a deranged illegal alien from Cuba, suddenly attacked commuters with a samurai sword on the Staten Island ferry, wounding 9 and killing 2. He has since been released from an institution and is still in the US."

You never know when tragedy will strike. I just found out that my neighbors son was among those killed on the ferry.
OMG au1929....my sincere condolences...
au, sobering. From Florida, touch your neighbor for me.
I was worried about my good friends two sons who work in Manhattan and live on Staten Island. I had no idea that my neighbor had a son living in Staten Island. This has been a lousy few years several neighborhood people were lost on 9/11.
au, I am so glad that you posted a response here. Tragedy is a part of all our lives, but even in cyber space we tend to forget the fact that we are one and the same. God bless you and those that you love.

au -- We're all neighbors when it comes to something like this. Do what you can to help that family. We are all thinking of them.
AU -- I'm sorry to hear this news. So horrifying for the parents, so shocking even to your cyber-friends. As Letty quoted, "Every man's death diminishes me." It is true and all I can offer are my sincere condolences. The tragedy strikes home.
Staten Island looked so peaceful to me, like it would be a wonderful place to live and raise a family. How could a simple boat ride home become so awful?
