Context：
Most of the time the leafleting is a quick-hit-and-get-out affair. Once, however, the distributors were still in the area when a man accused of cheating on his girlfriend discovered the fliers and frantically tried to retrieve them from car windshields and street poles outside the other woman's home. The leaflets suggested the man would be rushing home to his mother after leaving his new squeeze.

Yes. One of the slang terms for a girllfriend is 'main squeeze.'

"Squeeze" is a much more romantic and/or sexual term....it denotes passion were as "girlfriend" is a legalistic word.

Well, that would depend on how you define 'girlfriend.' I don't see where 'girlfriend' is particulalry 'legalistic.' It's a female friend that's not quite a fiancee but is a more-or-less constant companion. And that's what a 'main squeeze' is, as well.
