I saw a movie of the same title, maybe 3 decades ago. It was kind of interesting.

Whoa. Is this based on the cartoon tv series? I (and my kids) adored that series.
I don't think so (but I could be mistaken). I think it's a newbie from James Cameron. Although there is already an XBox game being released in association with the movie.
Anything by James Cameron is usually excessively hyped. But I'm following...

Premise
The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully, is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. In order to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body, Jake agrees to travel to Pandora, a lush rainforest environment filled with incredible life forms " some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also the home to the Na’vi, a humanoid race that lives at what humans would consider to be a primitive level, but are actually much more evolutionarily advanced than humans. Ten feet tall, with tails and blue skin that sparkles, the Na’vi live harmoniously within their unspoiled world. But as humans encroach on Pandora in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi’s very existence is threatened " and their warrior abilities unleashed.
Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies in the real world, controlled by a human driver through a technology that links the driver’s mind to the Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Moreover, he falls in love with a young Na’vi woman, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched by her ferocity in battle.
As Jake slides deeper into becoming one of her clan, he finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na’vi " forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.
Oh, ok. We can talk about whatever anyone wants (better to keep the thread going). I just thought there was some confusion over what movie I started the thread about.
The trailer was just released today. My first impression was that some of the graphics reminded me of that movie Final Fantasy which came out several years ago. Although Avatar seems to be even better at rendering imaginary creatures/people.
I like the idea of this movie and I like it's scope, but I hope it has enough seriousness that it doesn't end up being a Jurassic Park on an Alien world. That would be disappointing.
The way to avoid disappointment is to keep your expectations on a realistic level.

And for an introduction to the idea of what an Avatar is (and can do), we have the release of Surrogates, coincidentally released just a few months before Avatar.

You really haven't seen the trailer unless you click on the 720p HD and if you have a 1080p newer model PC or Mac, click on that. It will take a few minutes to download so don't get anxious on the trigger finger on the play button.
It looks like a beautiful blending of science fiction and fantasy with a lot of computer generated animation which is suppose to be the best ever shown and I can imagine the 3D will be mind blowing.
