It didn't stick = it didn't hold water?

Context:
What does that even mean? Honestly. He acted "stupidly". Of course it didn't stick; I think Gates realized how big of a moron he sounded down at the station so he offered ID to prove who he was and everyone went on their merry way. Well, until he ran to the media proclaiming it was all about race. *pukes* What happened to this country? Now only black cops can question black citizens or have their careers killed because they have the wrong color of skin? The only person who acted "stupidly" is anyone who talks like they were there. That's not me, nor you, or our race-baiting president.

Sort of.

Hard to tell what didn't stick from the brief paragraph.

Usually it refers to criminal charges

"They arrested him for arson but the charges didn't stick"
