@Rockhead,
Used to be that the Reds would play the first game of the season at home. It was a nice tradition in honor of Cincinnati's claim as the home of the first professional baseball club. And Cincinnati made a big deal about it: parade, school holiday, the whole magilla. In the American League, the Washington Senators used to be the first club out of the gate, which would give the president the opportunity to throw out the first pitch.

But the Senators have vanished (twice), and major league baseball doesn't give a damn about tradition. We're just lucky the first game of the season this year wasn't in Tokyo.

So, the defensive play of the year was made on Opening Day. Still I don't know if I admire the play as much as I do Buehrle's complete nonchalance.

Ken Harrelson is, without a doubt, the worst broadcaster in all of baseball. Ever.

my favorite baseball quote from the internet today...

The Twins have Joe Mauer and fourteen guys who either are Nick Punto or look and play exactly like Nick Punto."

I think the Cubs discovered the Brewers' weakness this weekend: the Milwaukee pitchers were baffled when they realized they weren't facing batters dressed in Pittsburgh Pirates uniforms.

@joefromchicago,
Well, the Cubs did face the mighty Jeff Suppan, who, by the way, just pitched the 9th in the Brewers' 17-3 cornholing of the Pirates. No, he did not pitch nine innings. Yes, the organization has finally found the right place for him--the very end of any game in which the Crew has at least a ten-point lead.

The Brewers have now outscored the Pirates 53-4 in four games this year.

"Runs." They're called "runs."

@joefromchicago,
Joe, that is especially poignant for those of us in the a2k baseball league...

@joefromchicago,
Just because you are holding a baseball stick and wearing a baseball hat in your avatar doesn't make you the referee on the baseball court.

@Gargamel,
hey garg...

i got a fantasy baseball question i'm hoping you can answer, since you are the brew crew guru.

what good is a closer that can't beat the pirates, on a team that can only beat the pirates???

your boy didn't just blow a save, he destroyed all traces of it. smithereens and beyond...

i think i'm going to be sick now.

That was only once, during an unfortunate trip to Mexico.

@Region Philbis,
he's too cool...

"Winning's great, losing's bad, and when they lose, I feel bad," Uecker said. "I hate it. I played. Well, I didn't play, but I sat around."

@Rockhead,
Uecker once said that the first year he was brought up to the majors, the team graciously allowed his family free entry to the stadium. It took a few more years, however, for the team to allow him to enter the stadium.
