The progression of the women’s game did see one team, Fulham, go professional for a season whilst under the financial wing of its male counterparts. But as soon as that financial backing was taken away, they slipped into oblivion.

What does "financial wing" mean? Does it mean "support" or "section"?

@fansy,
It means the men's clubs offered financial support to the women's team.

"Under the wing" is a metaphor taken from birds, who often have their babies nestle literally under their wings for warmth and protection.

It is worth noting that Fansy is correct that the word "wing" can in some contexts mean a section of an organization, just as it can mean a section of a building.

However, Miss Wabbit is correct that in this context, it refers to the visual image of a bird harboring its young literally under a wing.
