how to uderstand the word "symmetry" in the following sentence?
"I want my life, the only life of which I am assured, to have symmetry or, in default of that, at least to acquire some clarity. "

The desire here is for balance, that the person's life has a measure of evenness.

Jtt has it right. Failing the balance though the person seeks some clarity so they at least understand their lives. Something very few of us ever achieve I'm afraid. Yours truy high up on that list!
