bladder infections, prostate, flomax

Reply Sat 7 Mar, 2009 09:35 am
hours after my recent surgery I developed a bladder infection, the folly catheter was removed, I was put on anti-biotics and all seemed well. The following day I had extreme pain, the folly catheter was reinserted and the doc gave me one day dosage of flomax as he said my prostate was greatly enlarged. One day later the pain returned and the doc put me on a daily dose of flomax which I continue to take. Prior to the surgery I had no need for flomax so I asked my primary doc if I could discontinue the flomax and she said "as long as you are doing well there is no way of knowing how you would do with the flomax dc'd, so keep taking it."
I would prefer to not keep taking the flomax and would hope to return to pre-surgery condition (not needing prostate meds).
Any men out there who have been on flomax and quit taking it?

How long are you supposed to take this? (How many days or refills is the prescription?)

You need to ask the Dr. WHAT the Flomax is treating. Sometimes with these meds, its for dealing with the nerves around the bladder area.

But I agree; , all meds have side effects.

If you quit it, you will know in 3 days if you really need to go back on it.

@dyslexia,
I opted for the six week radiation treatment and didn't experience any side effects until mid-way through. Toward the end of the treatment I did have some painful urination so was prescribed a pain killer that targets the bladder and Flomax. I've discontinue it if I'm not having a problem, usually about a week. I only have a slight enlargement -- the urologist caught the cancer when it was very small in my scheduled two year biopsy. Flomax doesn't shrink the prostrate -- that would be Avodart. It relaxes the muscles around the around the prostrate area (even if it's removed) so the urethra stays opened, allowing normal flow of urine.

@Lightwizard,
These are the side effects:

Back pain; blurred vision; cough; decreased sexual ability; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; lightheadedness; runny or stuffy nose; sinus inflammation; trouble sleeping; weakness.

Back pain -- I wouldn't be able to judge as I have some back pain previous to taking Flomax, but it doesn't seem to exacerbate it.

Blurred vision -- no.

Cough -- no.

Decreased sexual activity -- you're kidding, or get Viagra.

Anyway, to all the rest, I can't attribute any of them specifically to taking Flomax. I became used to the blood pressure medication after a few months which would have the common side effect of dizziness.

Do you take it at bedtime or an hour after dinner?

I have a couple of weeks left on the Flomax and then it will be replaced by "a less intensive drug" Doxazosin meslate. (whatever that is)

@dyslexia,
I was prescribed Flowmax while in the hospital, and a one month prescription at discharge. I had one appointment with a urologist after discharge. He said "quit taking that stuff". I don't know what went into either decision.

@dyslexia,
Dys....just a general baldder infection thing:

DRINK.....lots and lots and lots of water.

With citrus or lemon is best (natural, not sugary crap...just squeeze into your water)

Then drink more.

And more.

This is good for symptoms and keeping your bladder healthy.

@dyslexia,
Hmm, I'm going to check into that one. Always question your doctor about what they are prescribing. I also the drinking of of a lot of water and as far as fruit juices, cranberry, grape or a combination (which is what I buy, with no added sugar).

@Lightwizard,
My doctor just changed my Flomax for Cardura as he thought that was an excellent idea. Thanks!

The side effect is dizziness and fainting but that can be avoided my starting with 1 mg a day and increasing the dosage. It has no sexual side-effects, and actually most patients regain any loss of potency. I'd better warn my partner!

@dyslexia,
I probably have to give it a little more time and I'm now due for a new PSA test which I've going to do tomorrow.

I had already researched that with the Mayo Clinic, St. Jude, Web MD and many other sites. Cardura (Doxazosin) is tried and tested to obtain the same relief with the benefit of lower blood pressure. Flomax was not recommended by my oncologist and my GP except for short term use after any treatment or removal of the prostrate. Most all those sites mentioned were, at that time, in agreement but haven't checked lately. I go by what my Oncologist and GP tells me.
