@ebrown p,
I won't quote you, just look at the post number.

What we can do as a society is ban questionable dolls.

Get a grip, fella. Our society thrives, when it does, in the conversations that are free and forthright, which sometimes include dolls.

@Green Witch,
agree with green witch re the distinction re cigs and the commercialized doll.

(I was involved with a doll before all this, the Toni doll. Was in a couple of Toni commercials as extra, my dad being the director. I was given a doll. Didn't like it, eventually trashed it. Too bad, collectors would like it.) I remained liking Sally who was supposed to cry and wet, and didn't do much of either. Eventually she had a cracked skull, but still was loveable.

Given you mean, in this instance, Barbies, no, at least re bans. Mockery will do. Very slippery. Wait, I need to remove my nail polish.

perhaps it's just me but I find this entire issue to be a major example of gender insanity as in "Girls (women) are not capable of discerning dolls from reality. I wonder if boys can discern dolls (GI Joe) from reality (war) but I don't know of anyone suggesting that boys are that intellectually weak.
But I'm probably just being silly.

I don't think boys use male figured dolls (dolls!!!) as much as a cornicopia of action figures. Thus we face terminology.

I'm not against the impulse to action, just interested.

@dyslexia,
I don't think that's fair Dys, there are a lot of people who don't allow their boys to play with GI Joes.

And then there are these folks...

Quote:
In 1989 the Barbie Liberation Organization was formed. Taking advantage of similarities in the voice hardware of Teen Talk Barbie and the Talking Duke G.I. Joe doll, er, “action figure,” they absconded with several hundred of each and performed a stereotype-change operation on the lot.

...

The BLO returned the altered dolls to the toy store shelves, who then resold them to children who had to invent scenarios for Barbies who yelled “Vengeance is mine!” and G.I. Joes who daydreamed “Let’s plan our dream wedding!” Cleverly placed “call your local TV news” stickers on the back ensured that the media would have genuine recipients to interview as soon as the news broke.

@ebrown p,
So, what, ebrown... so what. You want to curtail any folk dealing with gi joe or barbie?

Talk about authoritarian.

@ebrown p,
Do what you want with your kids. Leave other people and their kids alone. Pretty simple.

and that's just fine with me because "a lot of other people" are making rules for their own families not other peoples families.

ebrown, I've been paying attention to you for a long time, but suddenly you're deconstructing.
I don't mean to mock you but speak as perplexed.
Perhaps more conversation.

No, it consisted of (a) saying that the attitude seems indicative of a fascist outlook, and (b) using a little hyperbole for humorous effect. You characterized it the way you did for no reason other than that you wanted to. Your own response to e_brown actually is somewhat hysterical:

Setanta wrote:

Fine, don't get your daughter a Barbie . . . after which, mind your own goddamned business. Other people's children, whose lives are not being endangered, are none of your goddamned business.

You have a character disorder. You've demonstrated in post after post, year after year, that you fly off the handle and flame people for the tiniest of causes or no cause. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

And for our REAL Barbie haters:

Execution Chamber Barbie

Quote:
If you're anti-Barbie and also against the death penalty, you'll have mixed feelings about a middle-schooler's Barbie Doll Electric Chair Science Project. At least we can all agree on the importance of science in the classroom. While I'm trying to keep all things Barbie away from my 2-year-old daughter, I certainly think she ought to leave middle school understanding the fundamentals of electricity. And if we have to send Barbie to the chair for that to happen, so be it. The step-by-step guide on Instructables expertly shows how to construct an electric chair for your Barbie and includes thoughtful touches such as shaving Barbie's head before strapping her into the chair.
