Thomas and I are in a race to a 30.0 BMI (Body Mass Index). A BMI of less than 30.0 pulls you out of the obese category and into the overweight category. I know that I, personally, have not seen a 30 or lower BMI in over a decade.

Here's where the calculator is: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

BMI is not a perfect measure of fitness because you can be very muscular (and healthy!) but since muscle weighs more than fat you would be tagged with a higher BMI. I don't think either of us are at the point where we need to specifically worry about that, so the measurement stick above is perfectly good.

We know we aren't starting from the same #, but that's okay. My number is lower right now but Thomas is fitter, so I think it evens out pretty well.

As of this morning, 2/22/09, I am 217.6 lbs. I am 5'6" which gives me a starting BMI of 35.1. I can update it every Monday when I do my official weighing in.

Thomas, what's yours?

Does anyone else want to join in the big countdown? The more the merrier!

C'mon, back your favorite racer!

Me Smile

BMI 32.1

thats odd though.

Not worrying about technical stuff.. but.. making a point..

I lift weights now, and my arms show it.
According to that little ticker thing.. if I lose 9.4lbs I am in the BMI 29.8 range which means I am not "obese"

but.. 9 lbs?
Pbbthh.. I can do that with my eyes closed, so can you.

what else should we shoot for?
JUST out of the obese range?
Or out of the obese range by... 4points? 5points?

@jespah,
I'm down to 25.1 from 30.8 a few years ago, which I'm happy about, have been holding steady for more than a year; am not dieting, just watching my nutrients such as they are. But.. I'm not at all fit. So I've gardening and walking in my immediate to-do list, some other things in mind as next steps after that..

So, I'm not racing, but hope to at least hold and perhaps lower my number..

Thomas, what's yours?

I'm 5'7" and weighed 240 pounds today, so I'm starting with 37.6. Let's see where we stand when we meet for a glass of water and no food in Philadelphia next month.

Hi Shewolf! How nice of you to join us!

What do you mean, "JUST" (CAPITALIZED no less)? I was never out of this range for 11 years.

@Thomas,
Laughing

trust me.. 'JUST' is no understatement..
Since you last saw me, I have lost about 50lbs.
I appreciate the fight for a normal BMI..

but.. my point is that , if someone joins ( like me for example) and according to that little ticker thing, all I need to do is lose 9 lbs.. that isn't too far.. so how about adding something else to it? Something else that makes it a tad harder ....

@djjd62,
We could do it in steps. 1 race to overweight, then another to "normal" BMI.

shewolf, about 185 lbs. for me puts me at a BMI of 29.9. Hmm. I'll think on this as I (ha!) eat breakfast. Smile

Yay, more racers!!!

@shewolfnm,
Fifty pounds since we last met? You looked pretty good to me back then. Evidently you built a lot of muscle with all this sleeping-daughter-lifting.

No way am I picking a favorite. I want you both to win! (Or should I say I want you both to lose?)

I'm creeping up on a normal BMI. Started at 45.3 back in 2005, currently at 26.5. (I'm 5'7", started at 289.4 lbs, currently 169.4.) I'm cheering for all of us!

Well, then back everyone! Smile

shew, I'm 5'6". Actually, lemme see: yeah, 185 gets me to a 29.9 BMI. You must be 5'7" then.

Yup -- I'm 5'7", and 191 pounds is my finish line for the race, too.

@jespah,
Lady, you're extremely tough to catch up with. Indeed, I didn't even hold my ground against you this week.

236 pounds today, for a BMI of 37.0

@jespah,
I was going to, but I was late for dinner. For your dinner, anyway. Also, there would have been a risk that I, not you, end up eating most of those chocolates.

I just entered my height and weight into a BMI calculator and was dismayed
to learn that I am too short.

@George,
Ha! Exactly. Me too.

(BMI calculators are NOT kind to people with sprinter thighs.)

Go Jes and Thomas, though!
