Please paraphrase this sentence. Thanks

Gone are the days when holidays were commemorative religious or civic events each year; today they are more typically an excuse for crass commercialism...something which intrudes on life rather than edifies it.

@fansy,
I have a feeling that the first word in question should be discrete rather than discreet. Discrete means "distinct" or "separate." Discreet, on the other hand, has the implication of "prudent" or "not ostentatious." Non-negotiable, in this context, would pretty well carry the same meaning as "inevitable" or "mandated."

@Merry Andrew,
Frank's paraphrase is pretty good, too.

I agree that discrete is the right word.
