Are there more snow days in the US or Canada, or elsewhere, than there used to be - in your memory of them?
I lived 'back east' - for quite a bit of my childhood: Dayton, Ohio (doesn't count, I didn't go to school at all there), New York City (1 year), Chicago area (5 years). I don't remember any snow days, and remember our side yard having accumulated snow between 18" high and 30" (the 30" being drifts, I suppose), not all the time, but not a surprise. Every so often on a2k I mention ice skating at -7 degrees F, before wind chill factor was part of weather news reports.
Perhaps my memory fails on the issue, or maybe snow days have increased.
The years in question are 1949 to 1955 - and there aren't thaaat many oldies here who were children in snowy climates at the same time I was. But there are a whole bunch of a2kers something like 6 to 10 years younger than I am.
Perhaps if there is an increase in snow days it happened more recently.
If so, any ideas why?
@ossobuco,
A rant from a Washington Post editor who seems to think that, at least there, some snow days are a reaction to a cultural change.

I was just saying that kids today have it easy and are a bunch of wimps.
Granted we had snow days, but it had to be a snow storm. This year there was no snow one morning and I went and drove my kids to school as normal. I got to the school and brought them up to the door at it seems there wasn't too many other people there yet. The door was locked. One of my daughter's teachers came to the door when she walked by - she said school was delayed until 10:00.
What the f*ck I thought as I noticed some other parents pulling in as well - I let them know. Seems there was some ice that morning so they delayed opening - I never thought to watch the news and see if school was delayed as they never had delayed before (in my 5 years experience at this school) and with no snow. Other parents were upset. I had no choice but to go back home and bring them later and come into work late.
Since then there have been two other delays and several snow days.
