Another Capitalization Question.

Is a person's job title supposed to be capitalized?

For example, "The Librarian was very stern".

Or, if the case was, "Bob, the Librarian, was very stern".

Most job titles are not capitalized. Elected office titles most times are, so are religious titles, but not jobs.

Bob, the Senator from Nevada, voted yes.

But there are exceptions to that:

Bob had been the mayor of Manchester for nineteen years.

Other guests were Mayor Bob Smith of Manchester, State Representative Carol Fraser and the president of the Teacher's Union,
Al Dumont who is a libarian at Middlewest High School.

Hi Harmonic, According to the Chicago Manual of Style, no job title is capitalized. The exception would be if the title were included as part of the name, e.g., President Bush. But, the president said that ...
