BERLIN: Police say a German man was seriously injured after losing control of his car that flew off the road and crashed through the roof of a church.

Police in the eastern state of Saxony say the car crashed through a guard rail at high speed on Sunday then up an embankment.

Police said Monday the embankment acted like a ramp, launching the car into the air and into the roof of a nearby church.

A special rescue vehicle had to be called in to free the driver from the roof seven yards (meters) above the ground. The 23-year-old driver is in a serious condition. Police did not release his identity.
