since compromise isn't immediately available, I was looking for terms that would communicate the same (or similar) meaning. So I was thinking the idea of compromise is to accept standards that are lower than is desirable - to the individual. The concept of settling for less will lead to regret. I wasn't able to find an ideal synonym but some candidates might be: concede, settle, "give in", conform. So the phrase doesn't need to use the word compromise but as long as the concept is communicated - that's the most important aspect.
