I've found men generally resent people intervening on their behalf. Thats not strictly true. I think there is a samurai code or something. It has to be a bloke from their gang. One of the most moving film clips I've ever seen was in High Noon, where his ex girlfriend came to his aid. Then starts berating his wife for not standing my her man when the shooting started. Certainly would make a good theme for Oprah....or maybe Jerry Springer.
I will always give up my seat for a pregnant woman or woman carrying a child. I think thats biology.
