With my current doctor I would say that the average visit is about 30 minutes but that includes time with the nurse who does the basics before the doctor comes in.

@ldiva00,
Personal experience is about 15 minutes actually spend with the doctor, and that's probably about typical. Now, waiting in the office, followed by a wait in an examining room can take any amount of time, especially as some doctors schedule all morning appoints at the same time, and deal with the crowd as it becomes convenient. I've had doctors do that, but they soon became someone else's doctor.

@boomerang,
Thanks. I forgot about the mandatory wiegh-in, temperature and bloodpressure routines.

It recently took me 4 months to get an appointment with a dermatologist. On the day of the appointment I waited almost an hour in the waiting room and afterwards had to stand on a line to pay. The doctor spent 20 minutes with me, but I asked a lot of questions. I think the average of 15 minutes is probably correct for direct doctor/patient interaction in a non-emergency situation.

@NickFun,
I just screaming hate that. Sounds like one of those docs that make appointments for everyone at, say 2Surprisedo p.m. That way, doctors never have to spend downtime without a patient. I know their time is valuable, but ours is worth something too, and I resent the arrogance.

For a routine visit, the duration of the visit is about 15 min. If the visit is for a physical exam, the time is usually 30 min. The visit to the blood lab takes about 15-30 min depending on the number of patients passing through for a blood draw.

The average mammography visit can take 20-60 min depending on your health and the complexity of your case.

@ldiva00,
I agree - about a half hour with about 15 - 20 minutes directly with the doctor.

I was in a doctors office 2 years ago and I was getting frustrated for being in there so long. The people who came in after me had already been seen and left! Then they called another person who came in after me and I said, "excuse me, I've been waiting for over an hour". When I finally got to see the doctor he told me my blood pressure was a little high and my heart beat was a bit fast. I told him "that's what happens when a person tries to prevent his fist from flying off".
