For a long time, having a good job meant having to commute the only people who worked at their houses were homemakers and stay-at-home parents.

Yes. And it's "A run-on sentence", not "AN run-on sentence". "For a long time, having a good job meant having to commute. Almost the only people who worked at home were homemakers and stay-at-home parents." (Also not, strictly speaking true--lots of self-employed people, like writers, artists, craftspeople, graphic designers, therapists of various sorts, have worked out of their homes for years, and probably many other occupations that don't immediately spring to my mind).

Between 'commute' and ' the' should be a period. Make 2 sentences
