What's the difference between gay marriage and civil unions?

Far as I can tell, in practice the major difference is the name of the institution.

One singles out a segment of the population as "different" and the other does not.

Keith Olbermann explains it in one of his Special Comments better than anyone else I've heard of late. You can either read it or watch it at the link.

by difference is that "civil union" infers that we are not worthy to be joined in the eyes of god
