Priest: No communion for Obama supporters

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

"Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."

Risking their immortal soul
During the 2008 presidential campaign, many bishops spoke out on abortion more boldly than four years earlier, telling Catholic politicians and voters that the issue should be the most important consideration in setting policy and deciding which candidate to back. A few church leaders said parishioners risked their immortal soul by voting for candidates who support abortion rights.

But bishops differ on whether Catholic lawmakers " and voters " should refrain from receiving Communion if they diverge from church teaching on abortion. Each bishop sets policy in his own diocese. In their annual fall meeting, the nation's Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights.

According to national exit polls, 54 percent of Catholics chose Obama, who is Protestant. In South Carolina, which McCain carried, voters in Greenville County " traditionally seen as among the state's most conservative areas " went 61 percent for the Republican, and 37 percent for Obama.

"It was not an attempt to make a partisan point," Newman said in a telephone interview Thursday. "In fact, in this election, for the sake of argument, if the Republican candidate had been pro-abortion, and the Democratic candidate had been pro-life, everything that I wrote would have been exactly the same."

Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Tax exemption is only a tool used by the government so it can control churches. Didn’t Jesus tell us to pay our taxes?

I disagree with the priest in this case as I also disagree with the typical liberal response on the issue.

God is the one who judges the heart not the priest, this priest has overstepped his ethical jurisdiction. This is not new, Catholic priests and clergy in general have been meddling unethically in God‘s affairs for years.

Yet you liberals have to insult God to make a point, two wrongs don't make a right.

How daft and heartless on both accounts.

@RexRed,
Insult god? Do you not think that a god of your ascribed magnitude would really give a rats ass about what anyone thinks? Especially when the only reason liberals exist is because of HIS actions.

OCCAM'S RAZOR^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Or maybe you and every other religiously biased knob <gasp> is wrong and the sky father doesn't exist. Imagine that! All this time you were believing something that didn't even exist! All the death and disagreement over a fairy tail! Wouldn't you just want to kill yourself if you suddenly realized that were true, hence why you still believe it.

Religion is emotional entrapment on a grand scale. What to do. Life goes on.

comminion/communion

The wine represents “the forgiveness of sins” (Christ Jesus’ spiritual, sinless, incorruptible nature born within us.) and the bread represents “physical healing to the body."

Is it damnation to eat the bread not knowing what it stands for? Is it damnation not to correctly teach the "true" meaning of the bread and/or wine? Well it is certainly not going to "help" if one eats something in a holy ritual and is not instructed of its actual purpose... Yet, that is what usually happens.

Communion is symbolic of the holy spirit "gift" and wisdom from God.

Communion is a reminder of our righteousness, sanctification, redemption, justification, and the ministry of reconciliation. This spiritual birth is the "new" body, soul and spirit of Christ Jesus within.

Jesus Christ taught communion to his disciples to foreshadow the coming of the holy spirit on the “day of Pentecost.”

Thus communion is to "remind" us of the REALITY and presence of God, in Christ, within us.

We may not "remember" all the time... but we are instructed "not to forget" what was wrought at Calvary on the cross.

Psalms 103:2 KJV
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

Corinthians 5:17 KJV
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away ; behold , all things are become new.

18.And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19.To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

20.Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

21.For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
