Smile I just went thru a CNN list of the nations with nuc's and a list of how many tests they had performed; both above ground and below. It amounted to roughly 2500 tests. Why is that necessary? As well, what is the purpose of testing underground?

It's probably a lot like an erection or orgasm. Just because one guy is able to get it up does not guarantee another the same success or the same results.

As for testing underground, we're supposed to feel safer, I suppose, much like using a condum. Wink

Some of the tests are sabre rattling. When a nation aquires nukes the rumor starts being believed when talk of a test circulates and the announcement culminates in the first test (more of a demonstration).

Nuclear weapons have also evolved quite a bit and testing is a necessary element to the evolution.
